If you are a wheelchair user getting in and out of your home can be difficult, thresholds, changes in levels, and steps leading to the outdoors are impossible to negotiate. Being stuck in your own home, because wheelchair access is poor is not acceptable - of course, our homes weren't originally designed with accessibility in mind, but it's our job to help you make your home fit your life.
There are many different wheelchair lifts available to help solve this problem depending on how far you need outdoor lifts to travel but whatever the situation is, we have all the lift services that you need to access your property with ease. We'll explain the different options to you in this article, but do feel free to reach out to our friendly team who can survey your property and help find the best solution for you.
Whatever the environment you have we have many design options to make your building or business accessible to all. The benefits of having a lift installed will far outweigh the costs bringing you more customers. Did you know that disabled people have a combined spending power in the UK of £247 billion per year (based on 2020 figures)! Imagine losing out on business or visitors just because your premises is not accessible!
You also have an obligation under the Equalities Act (which now amalgamates all discrimination laws including the Disability Discrimination Act) where premises are supposed to make "reasonable adjustments" and fairer access for all. The number one barrier that disabled people face is steps and changes in levels something that can easily be overcome with disabled access lifts like the ones we offer.
Our experienced surveyor can help you decide which model of wheelchair lift is the most suitable one for your premises whether that be open-style platform lifts, vertical platform lifts, step lifts, or incline platform lifts. Didn't know that there were that many types to choose from.
Here we'll explain everything you need to know to find the best access lifts for your property whether it be for your home, business or work.
There are many different variations of outdoor wheelchair lifts, so let's explain them all to you so you can have a better idea of how we can help you find the perfect solution. Options for the types of lifts you can have installed are:
Inclined platform lifts/ incline platform stair lift - these outdoor platform lifts travel on the staircase (models include Supra Curved and Supra Linea Straight)
Step lift is a low-rise platform lift that rises vertically - usually to help overcome just a couple of steps or changes in level such as getting access to a front door instead of using a ramp. (SP500 model)
Vertical platform lift with various travel heights and platform sizes to suit all requirements (models include the LR Platform Lift, Liberty Open Lift, and Liberty 3)
These lifts are mainly for wheelchair users, however, the Liberty 3 you can stand in and the Supra range can come with an optional fold-down seat on the platform carriage so you could wheel on or sit on the lift.
All models are suitable for indoor and outdoor use being weatherproofed. You can explore these models in more detail on our product pages.
If you are considering a lift platform installation then we are here to help you and chat through all the options and offer no-obligation survey visits to recommend the best solutions.
Wheelchair lift models come in various platform widths and lengths. When visiting a customer's home, we will check the dimensions of their wheelchair or scooter and match it with the size of the platform that will best accommodate the wheelchair/scooter.
When specifying an outdoor platform lift for a commercial building or public buildings, we will recommend the best and largest-size platform model that will accommodate most wheelchair lift users, dependent on the area available.
As well as the size of the platform you will also need to allow for the wheelchair to manoeuvre onto the platform, so as a general rule of thumb, we would normally allow 3m for the platform and wheelchair turning circle.
If you don't need a lift that can take a wheelchair, we also do a range of outdoor stair lift models that look just like indoor stairlifts but are weatherproofed for external use. These are a more cost-effective option if you are okay to use a seated stair lift and will travel up an outdoor staircase.
They are all fixed to the steps and need a level base at the bottom of the stairs and top for a safe mount/dismount. The approximate stair width needed to fit an outdoor stair lift is 700mm+.
If you have a very large width staircase and plenty of space at the top and bottom of the stairs then yes! However, most domestic homes do not have the space required available so these platform stair lifts are generally too big for domestic households unless you live in a very spacious home.
They will fit on wide outdoor domestic steps, but they are more widely used for commercial building and public buildings projects because the lift platform takes up over 1 metre on the staircase when in use.
Normally, in domestic homes in the UK, staircases are around 700-800mm wide, making the inclined platform lifts too large for most houses. Additionally, there is rarely enough space in domestic hallways to accommodate the large platform lifts, or a large enough turning circle for wheelchair users.
If you are looking to install a lift in your home it would be a domestic stairlift or a wheelchair lift also known as a home lift. You can see our range of stairlifts and homelifts on our website.
If we are looking after your entire project we can apply on your behalf for any necessary building regulations, building notices, and planning.
We can take care of your installation from start to finish, project managing the whole job with our contractors for any electrical, plumbing, carpentry or builders work, so it is stress-free for you.
We can also work with your contractors and advise on the scope of the work needed, and have a site meeting with plans to make sure the contractors are fully briefed. However, it will be your responsibility to manage the job and make sure that the site is ready for the lift installation and prepared correctly to the deadline, otherwise, you will incur extra costs.
Some form of builders work is normally required, for example, the installation of an outdoor socket to power the lift, making sure we have a level floor to fix to, and forming a shallow pit.
The cost of our wheelchair lifts can vary greatly depending on the type and configuration of the lift, how many floors it will travel to, the travel distance, additional features, and the builder's work required to fit the lift.
As an approximate guide, incline platform lifts can start from £8,000 with curved models being more expensive.
A low-rise platform lift like a step lift can start from £5,000, with other vertical platform lifts starting at £x for the more basic models through to £X for more advanced commercially rated models.
